Remote Access (VPNs)

A VPN (virtual private network) is a way to use a public telecommunication infrastructure, such as the Internet, to provide remote offices or individual users with secure access to their organisation's network. Before VPNs, when a remote user wanted to connect into their office a point-to-point data call was required. This was expensive as the user often was making a call from a hotel via their overpriced telephone system, or they were calling from overseas! The office also had to maintain a diallup telephone line for each concurrent diallup user that they were expecting.

With the advent of Broadband and public Wireless Networks, the VPN has dramatically cut the costs of remote access. A single Broadband line servicing an office can support multiple concurrent VPN users, and these remote users can be connected to inexpensive Broadband lines, wired or wirelessly either in their homes, hotels or coffee bars. The basic premise of how a VPN works is that both ends of the VPN (The remote user and the office) are connected to the Internet, and an encrypted tunnel is created between both ends to support totally secure data transfer. Once a user is connected in, he can access almost any resource in the office over the connection, such as printers, servers and mainframe systems.
